ABB Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

ABB VFDs (AC drives) improve efficiency, process control, and equipment life across HVAC, water, machine, and heavy-industry applications. This collection brings together micro and machinery drives, general-purpose drives, and application-focused families for HVAC and water/wastewater, plus industrial high-performance options with low harmonic and regenerative variants.

What you’ll find here

  • Micro & Machinery: compact drives for OEM panels and machine axes where space and quick setup matter.

  • General-Purpose: plant-wide standard drives with broad power ranges, built-in EMC/DC choke, common fieldbus options.

  • Application-Focused: HVAC (ACH) and Water/Wastewater (ACQ) models with tailored macros (fans, pumps, PID, sleep/boost).

  • Industrial High-Performance: ACS880 platform for demanding torque control, multi-drive cabinets, ultra-low harmonic and regenerative variants.

Selection notes (practical)

  • Voltage & power: match motor voltage class (200–240/380–480/575/690 V) and kW/HP with required overload class (light/normal/heavy duty).

  • Environment: choose enclosure IP20/chassis, NEMA 12/IP54 wall-mount, or engineered panels; consider ambient derating.

  • Harmonics & power quality: where THDi limits apply, consider drives with built-in choke, or ultra-low harmonic / AFE versions.

  • I/O & comms: Modbus RTU is common; add BACnet (HVAC), PROFINET/EtherNet/IP/Profibus/Modbus TCP as needed.

  • Safety & energy: look for STO (SIL3) and energy optimizer/PID to reduce wear and power use.

Frequent asked questions know about ABB Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Selecting & Sizing

How do I choose the right ABB drive family (ACS/ACH/ACQ/ACS880)?

Pick by application: ACS (general/machinery), ACH (HVAC, BACnet, fan macros), ACQ (water/wastewater, pump features), ACS880 (industrial high-performance, low-harmonic/AFE options).

What duty class should I use—light/normal/heavy?

Match the load. Light for fans/pumps with low overload; Normal for mixed loads; Heavy for conveyors/mixers with high starting torque. Ensure the drive’s overload current meets the duty.

Do I need a larger kW rating than the motor?

Not usually. Size to motor FLA and required overload; then check ambient/altitude derating, enclosure type, and any braking/harmonic options.

Installation & Integration

What enclosure should I choose—IP20, NEMA 12/IP54, or cabinet?

IP20/chassis for protected panels; NEMA 12/IP54 for dusty plant rooms; cabinetized or engineered panels for harsh or multi-drive systems.

Do ABB VFDs include EMC/harmonic mitigation?

Many models include DC chokes and EMC filtering. For strict THDi limits or weak grids, select Ultra-Low Harmonic (ULLH/AFE) variants or add external filters.

Performance, Protection & Lifecycle

Do these drives support functional safety (STO)?

Many ABB drives (e.g., ACS580/ACS880/ACH580/ACQ580) include STO (SIL 3) as standard or option. Check the specific model.

What about braking and fast stopping?

Most ranges offer a brake chopper (built-in or optional). Add a brake resistor when rapid decel is required.

How do I extend drive life?

Keep ambient within spec, maintain airflow, follow cable/EMC practices, back up parameters, and schedule fan/capacitor checks per the maintenance schedule.
